In late 2008 AHURTOD launched human rights clubs in two secondary schools in Buea, South West region of Cameroon. This project that received financial support from Alert Fund for Youth Activities, The Netherlands and material support from Youth Initiative for Human Rights, saw the installation of two pilot clubs including one at the Buea Youth and Animation Center, and MABICOL College Great Soppo Buea.
The installation ceremony was marked with sketches and singing from both schools. The sketch performed by the students from the Buea Youth Animation Center, focused on the rights to health in country where health care is still not accessible to all. Furthermore, the Principal of the host institution MABICOL who opened and closed the ceremony, challenged students to carry the theme of the day “All human beings have equal rights, know and protect them” to members of their local communities, household, and to exercise tolerance in a society where cultural and traditional values sometimes put people into classes. He also thank AHURTOD for selecting his school as host for the launching events and pledge to incorporate the teaching of human rights into its school’s curriculum.
The event ended with the adoption of a plan of action by both clubs, the distribution of t-shifts, universal declaration of human rights booklets, snacks and pictures.
